The Welch brothers, Flint Hill, and Li. L. Parrish, Estes, have established contour lines preparatory to plowing strips for seeding alfalfa. The importance of esestablishing alfalfa in contour strips on sloping fields cannot be over-stressed. A properly prepared alfalfa seed bed is very subject to sheet erosion. Many unsatisfactory stands of alfalfa result from sheet erosion and fingure gullies. The gullies also hinder harvesting operations. Not only is soil lost but lime, fertilizer and organic matter are likewise washed away. "Erosion losses on long sloping fields are enormous,” said Downing Wdod, prominent farmer and orchardist near Washington, and Rappahannock
