Tuesday will be Uncle Starsand-Stripes Sammy’s birth day. Let's see, we’re 174 years old.
It was a brave group of men who signed tjie Declaration of Independence. However, bravery did not cease with them. Pause and reflect. Come this 4th of July, Uncle Sam’s nieces and nephews will bravely face and endure hardships which make the founding fathers’ convention look like a tea-party.
Did John Hancock have to take the family to the beach? How would one of the Lees have survived the ordeal of the early rising, lunch packing and collecting all the equipment to start the day? Would Franklin’s bravery have stood the test in facing the traffic of the holiday crowd?
The brave signers of the Declaration didn’t have to take the family to the horse show. Neither did they have to face a picnic lunch with ants. No, our brave forebears just faced the wrath of England, not the ill-tempers of a tired, sun-burned family at the end of a holiday.

Now the ladies are to appear in a magazine article. It was thought that some of the excitement should be beginning to die down:—now that the election was nearly three weeks past • but no. A gentleman is in the county today interviewing the victorious women who are slated to govern the town of Washington for the next couple of years.
Some folks have been heard to remark that the publicity is good for the county, that it will give other people a chance to know how wonderful a place Rappahannock is. On the reverse side, some citizens think it is unnecessary for others to know about the county, or they will come in in droves and take over.
In a few years, perhaps, we shall have to divide the local folks into two classes: those who were here B. F. (before fame) and those who came seeking to live in the great feminine county.
Up in Jenkins Hollow those new folks will have to be classed with the old-timers, for they are already established.
Looks like we will be listed as those hardy enough to live through the petticoat regime and those who allowed it to happen to the county.
