He pointed out further that each week end, and particular^ on those lengthened by holidays, highway users face the inevitable four fatal factors of fatigue, drinking, abnormal traffic and undue haste. “If people would only realise,’’ he said, “that attempting to squeeze an extra hour or so into our holiday by driving too fast or when exhausted is literally asking for death, that the highway is.no place for celebrating or its aftermath, and that heavy traffic skyrockets the accident rifdc, we wouldn’t see days like the Sunday before Labor Day last year when 15 people were killed during the 24-hour period.”
The Safety Official stated emphatically that in spite of all that can be accomplished by Education, Enforcement and Engineering, there must be proper individual reception before marked improvement can be shown. “Traffic tragedies occur,” be continued, “because £ takes aft actual arrest' to curb a reckless driver, because the facilities for ease and comfort built into our highways are utilis' ed to facilitate speed, and because attempts at safety education are brushed off with the ‘it can’t happen to me’ philosophy.” In stressl ing the folly of this state of mind, * Colonel Woodson pointed out that an individual can be just as effectively killed through no fault whatsoever of bis own as when he is the offender, and that everyone must be eternally alert for the “other fellow” who thinks he’s the only driver, or walker on the road.
In jclosfrig, Colonel Woodson stated that all available personnel of the State Police will patrol the highways in 10-hour Shifts but that his message for the week end would he: “Please don’t make it necessary for them to arrest you but give voluntary and scrupulous adherence to our traffic laws as well as the rules of ordinary common sense.
