people xrom tne county visiteu tne District Home at Manassas. . ~ Wheq the meeting was turned over to Mr. Bruner, he began by telling the group pertinent facts about the four existing district homes for the aged in Virginia) namely, those at JAanassas, Chatham, Dublin, and Waynesboro. These homes are operating at a cost of $1.00 to $1.50 a day per person. The homes were originally intended to care for the able bodied indigent. However, the counties found a need for taking care of the sick, and in three of the homes the trendy has been to provide infirmary care. In the home at Chatham 36 of the 96 inmates are bedfast. All the homes are faced with the problem of enlargement.
The District Homes are operated by a board which is composed of one member from each county. Each member has one Vote. The member is usually a, member of the Board of Supervisors, although the law does not require this.
Since these homes are public institutions, Old Age Assistance cannot be granted to people 'in them. Qeneral Belief funds can'1 be used to pay for the care of indigents in these homes, which are approved by the state. Mr. Bruner pointed out that this group of counties might want to consider forming a private corporation home, such as the Patrick Henry Hospital in Warwick county. Fourteen counties and two cities belong to this private institution." The Patrick Henry Home was set up to provide for the chornically ill. V
