There is one statement that the ladies will admit: they shall depend upon the men. Here at the News office it’s the feminine name -listed aapublisher.hut the d#y. anyone thinks that the brother is not the real power behind the throne, they axe mistaken. He is. Recent papers carried the death notice of one of the oldest writers •of a syndicated news column, but he was not the first. It was a lady. Dorothy Dix has the distinction of having the oldest Syndicated news column, with ther advice to the love-lorn. “Hiss Dix,” and her advice became a by-word in many homes, and she came in for her share of joking, too. The ladies of Washington’s new municipal government have voiced no wishes to take over any such duties as those of Hiss Dix, but like that famous lady, they may do a great deal of good along with the days of having to take the joking. They are not seeking publicity for their job Is one of service to their town in a dignified way, and with dignity they will perform their duties.
fT There is no doubt that they will call on the men-folks. During the government of the male mayors and councilmen, it has been no-> ticed that help was forthcoming from ladies’ auxiliaries.
The stories are oft-told: the female who screams at the sight of a caterpillar; but the story has been told also of the man who fainted when his child was hurt, which gave the mother a sick man to take care of, as well as the injured child. ,
The ladies are going to do a fine job of running the town. They may be like the ladies in Clintwood, Virginia, and refuse to tackle the job after one whack t it, but they’ll get accomplished whatever they decide is for the good of the town.
They’ll have co-operation, too. Each citizen is proud of his own community and he’s willing to help in any undertaking that is for the town’s improvement. The ladies, while they are in office, iwill get the credit for all good accomplished, and that’s fine, because also they shall receive the criticism if somebody gets peeved with some of their work—and someone will, £ou can bet your bottom nickel.
There’s one thing of which the ladies can rest assured: the hottei the criticism, the more they are doing; for the fellow who is always right in the eyes of the public is either dead or else he is doing nothing.
Sincerely and truly, though some will not admit it publicly, the ladies go into their offices Friday with the good wishes of everyone.
