Holiday Safety
Comes again the happy Yuletide and we prepare to cross the threshold of a new year which we hope will see us free from the horrible insecurity of the present international fiasco.
Back in the First Century B.C., Pliny the Elder wrote: “With man, most of his misfortunes are occasioned by man.” Somej, 1760 years’ later Bobby Burns echoed the observation with, “Man’s inhumanity to man makes countless thousands mourn.”
“Man’s inhumanity to man” is a thought upon which we can. ponder long. Two thousand years since we were given the Christian faith, yet not only have we failed to eliminate war but wars become succetediitgly more hideous and disastrous. Both authors, Roman and Gael, make a tragic parody of the Christian Faith’s basic tenet of goodwill to men.
Nbt only has this inhumanity brought us the portent of national disaster but an absolutely pre-t ventable casualty list which dwarfs the dismal roll from the frozen rice paddies of Korea in size and heartache if not in news value.
So ingrained in our very beings is the theory of goodwill at Christ* mastime that many Americans of non-Christian faith, while not observing the same religious significance of the season, manifest their love for fellow men in much the same way as Christians.
Still, an estimated 90 percent of what we call traffic “accidents” are occasioned by violations of the Golden Rule and, here, after more than 2000 years of a faith based upon it, we not only are harassed by wars and rumors of wars but are fast making the worst traffic death record since 1946. About 900 people iwill have 'been cata-i paulted into eternity at the year’s end by the willful negligence of their fellow beings.
People who make war do it to advance their own interests. In these cases there is wealth, power and territory at stake. While war mongering—to put it mildly —is greatly to be deplored, warmongers strive for some very concrete gain. The same holds thru® usually with a murderer. As antisocial as is his behavior, he seeks some large personal gain.
How about those 900 traffic deaths? Each death was occasioned because someone wasn’t willing to lose a few seconds, didn’t take the trouble to have his car repaired, insisted upon driving or walking when he was in no physical condition to do so or some such trifle as that.
