At our regular P.-T. A. meeting January 9, 1951, We held a panel discussion on the* three questions set forth in your letter of November 20, 1950, and our comments are as follows:
1. What courses are most important for the public schools to te;ach? • Courses and Reasons for teaching: ( Arithmetic—Basis for all coputation. Develops reasoning power.
Arts—(To sense objects truly.
English—To use and appreciate . accurate language. •
Geography and History — To have at least an elementary ‘ undertanding of other peoples; their habits, locations and backgrounds. -4 Health-—An essential 'factor for all other learning. ‘ (
Physical Education—By use of playground equipment' ,<
Reading—Medium of all learning from books.
Spelling and Writing—To correctly interpret ourselves.
Our main emphasis should be on basic skills that can be carried over into (whatever field one en. ters. To read well, to write well and to speak effectively are skills that are used in every occupation.
2. What, in your opinion, are the . objectives , of the public - schools?
The basic object of the public schools is to educate each individ■ ual so lie may experience a better adult life. To obtain this objective we feel all pupils who are capable of receiving basic elementary training should be given this opportunity. For these pupils who are not able to acquire this training, an educational program incorporating manual training ahquld be .given. There are many localities that are not able financially to support this type of training—for these localities we suggest that the compulsory school law be-revised to allow those who should be taking manual training to discontinue schooling. This would be. an important step toward raisings
