nnd Culpeper. Her father, Lloyd HUle, was a Confederate veteran who ran the Hotel deHiale in Sperryville, twenty miles from any' railroad. - *

When Mias Lizzie was in her teena she began to help her father in the hotel. It was here that she met her lifelong friends, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Smoot. Mr. Smoot had a tannery in Sperryville at this time and he would stay at Mr. His. le’s hotel whenever he was in (Sperryville on business. During the summers, Mrs. Smoot would bring the children over from Alexandria to spend their vacation at the Hotel de Hisle. Miss Lizzie would help care for the Smoot children while they were at the hotel and would often go back with them to their home in Alexandria when they left the mount-/ dins in the fall. Sometimes she’d visit a few weeks, sometimes until Christmas; but whenever she was there she was like Santa*Claus to the children.

The tale is told that when the Smoots were in Alexandria, Clinton was a member of a band of spirited boys. Their chief delight lay in tormenting a cantankerous old neighbor, Mr. Griffin, who had a beard down to his waist. These boys, equipped with a notched spool, a nail, and some string, would stealthily put a "tick-tack” on long-suffering Mrs. Griffin’r window. When he heard the tictack-tick-tack begin at the window, Mr. Griffin, beard flying in. the wind, would pursue the gang. As the boys scattered, scrambling over the high board fence to reach their respective homes, Miss Lizzie would open the hack door of the Smoot’s home and wait open-armed to receive and protect young Clinton.

Miss Lizzie has always had a store of love to give out. Perhaps she acquired her ability to lov^ and to forget herself when others need attention becaue «Ji® was the oldest child in a family of three sisters and a brother.
