Buy your chicks from “a hatchcry that is in the Virginia National Poultry Improvement Plan. These hatcheries are inspected for sanitation, type and weight of eggs set, and for quality of the chicks and poultry produced. Likewise, the breeding flocks are inspected at intervals during the breeding season to insure that they remain in good health.

Under the National Poultry Improvement Plan there are three clasiflcations as to breeding and two classifications as to health or freeness from the only disease that can-be carried from the hen through the egg to the chick: this is Pullorum disease or white diarrhea. , ~r~'

The breeding stages or classifications are: - * . -

1. “Virginia U. S. Approved”-' chicks are produced from-flocks in which the males and females have been rigidly and thoroughly selected for constitutional vigor, standard bred and production qualities and banded by state inspectors.---r- spectors.---r2.

“Virginia U. S. Certified’* chicks are produced from flacks that fulfill all the requirements of the U. S. Approved fllocks and are mated to individually pedijl greed U.S. R.O.P. males. -

3. “U. S. Record of Performance** chicks are produced from U. S. Record of Performance females and U. S. R.O.P. single male mating^ : - 7. ■ . 7. .' 7; "~7'

The Pullorum control stages or classes are:

1. “Pullorum - Passed Flocks** permits no tolerance in the official recognition of the flock. For example, if a flock should vhave a slight infection when first tested, it may be treated until ho reactors appear, at which time it is recognised as a Pullorum-Passed flock. V':./-. if:'.;

2. “Pullorqm-C lean Flocks? mean all breeders shall be tested for pullorum disease when more than four months of age and shall -contain no reactors on the -first' test made within six months immediately preceeding the date of first sale of hatching eggs, poults, dr breeding stock form such flocks. >. For example, if a hatchery is listed as U. S. Approved Pullorum Passed, this means it is, in the first ' breeding stage (standard . bred, selected for individuality, but production capabilities of parent stock is not known) and from teh health standpoint, parent flocks have been tested and contain no reactors.

Remember to look for the official state label, Remember in the heavy breeds there are strains bred .for broiler production and others for egg production. Specify which you want when placing your order. Remember ORDER * FROM NEARBY HATCHERY OF GOOD REPUTATION CO-OPERATING IN THE VIRGINIA NATIONAL POULTRY IMPROVEMENT PLAN. ,

A 1950 list of these hatcheries may be seen at the county agent’s ofice and the homes of Miss Nellie Johnson, Mrs. Ada N. Updike, Archie Bailey, Miss Elsie Dodson, Floyd Compton, a n d Woodrow Coughlin.
