Liming materials are considered the key that makes the major plant food elements. available to plants. Soil analysis is an effec' tive means of determining whether there is sufficient lime present to make the plant food in your soil or to keep those applied through the use of fertilisers available. ‘ -
Lime unlocks the soil by sweetening it. Some plants need sweeter soils than others if they are tp give the farmer a worthwhile yield. This sweetness or sourness is referred to by soil chemists as pH. These chemists working in conjunction with the agronomist have found at which pH range, plants render their best performance. For example, a coil that is well drained and having a pH range of 6.5-7.5 is sufficient for good alfalfa production, while a pH of 6.0 to '7.0 is satisfactory for' grains and clovers produced here in Rappahannock. ,
Actually, a soil having a pH of 7.0 is neither acid nor alkaline, above 7 is alkaline, while 7.0 is seid. How far below 7.0 reveals the degree of acidity, or sourness, ,*• or how tightly the door to successful crop production is locked. 1 To be sound any chemical test depends upon tile area for which it was de—eloped. Our soil Should be tested by the agronomy department of VPI at Blacksburg or be sent to the Commissioner of Agriculture at Richmond. After analysis or results of the test have 1 been received, a farmer knows, whether or not he needs lime or which analysis fertilizer should be. applied to the particular crop concerned.
