desired amount of growth which insures the best production. If too much nitrogen is applied, the trees may he too vegetative and produce large poorly colored fruit. If trees lack; adequate nitrogen, the leaves will be light green and the fruit small. - * Soil Compared to Foliage Application of Nitrogen

During recent years resealrck workers have given cinsiderablei attention to the spraying of nutrient elements on the leaves of plants. This method of application has been used successfully with a number of minor elements such as sine and copper. Nitrogen in the form of urea spray has given favorable response with apple trees, especially on the McIntosh variety in New York. On .the* basis of these favorable results many growers have requested in* formation on this method of fertilizing their orchards.

Although the application of minor elements to trees, in spray form is a commercial practice on citrus trees in Florida and some other sections of the country, it seems doubtful that the- entire amount of nitrogen - needed by apple trees eould be supplied in this way. Fruit trees need from 400 to 600 times as much nitro_ gen as they do of minor elements such as zinc or copper. It is questionable whether the leaves are capable of absorbing such a large amount of i itrogen in the form of spray. - . The bulk of the nitrogen fertilizer needed by the trees should therefore be applied to the soil.Then, during years of heavy production or when excessive rain-. fall has leached the nitrogen from the ground, supplemental applications may be made as a urea spray on the leaves.
