Adams, Jr., director of the Morgan Library in New York, which also has two copies of the Gutenberg Bible, said the latest copy to be found is “without question the real thing.” Scribner’s says it also was authenticated by the British Museum, in London.
Of all the people who have handled the Gutenberg Bible, the man who probably made the least of it was Johann Gutenberg. Gutenberg, “the father of modern printing,” died in debt.
Around 1450 he prjnlfsd the first book in history with movable type. This was the Bible, of which, it is believed he probaly made about 180 copies.
Until last month, only 45 copies were definitely known to be still in existence. The United States had 12. The remainder were scattered among great libraries and collecters in Europe.
The record price ever paid for any book was the $151,000 which the “Bay Psalm,” first book printed in America, bought at auction in 1948.
