This disease is caused by a definite disease producing organism known as a virus, one which normally attacks the salivary glands of the body of the unprotected person. After exposure to the disease usually a period of 14 to 21 days is required before illness develops. Mumps is recognised by the swelling and tenderness of salivary glands in front of the ears and below the jaws. There may be only one gland infected, or the disease may locate in all salivary glands. Fever is present from the onset and is of slight or moderate level. Malaise occurs of varied degrees and this is accompanied by sore throat and difficulty in swallowing. The entire illness generally lasts one week to ten days" in the uncoihplicated case. Method of Spread

Mumps is highly contagious and others may be infected before the nature of the disease is apparent. The virus is spread by direct contact with the mumps case. Whenever possible the case should be separated from unprotected persons. The disease may be spread from the patient several days before onset and while symptoms persist. - Prevention

As yet no vaccine or other preparation has been developed or is available for the permanent prevention of mumps. Most cases appear in children of elementary school age, and the illness then is usually of moderate nature. Since the danger of mumps is due to the complications that may occur after puberty, it is held desirable by many health authori
