Entertain At Bridge
Mr. and Mr*. R. E. Wood entertained two table* of bride* Saturday evening. Those playing were Mrs. C. H. H. Branch, Miss Louise O’Bannon, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Aylor, and Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Winfrey. Mr.. Aylor won the high high score pried and Mias Louise O’Bannon was awarded the traveling prize. Refreshments were served by the Jiostess.

To Thin Trees
Thinning apples will help Virginia growers produce high-quality fruit, and will promote more annual cropping, saya A. H. Teske, extension horticulturist at VPL
He points out that apple growers are facing a serious labor and material'shortage, and cannot afford to produce‘large quantities ©f low-grade fruit—as they usual- * ly do when trees are allowed to overload in heavy crop years.
Thinning fruit from overloaded trees will prevent overbearing. It will conserve plant-food substances; and will reduce tree breakage. *
With a crop more uniform in size and color, there will be lees 2 low-grade fruit to handle at harvest time. Marketing problems will be reduced. . .,1*.
Teake says there are three ways growers can thin their apples. In the past thinning the erop by pruning has not been recommended, but under present conditions, pruning can be used to good advantage. _ - A :
Carefully pruning out week fruit wood will reduce the amount of small, poorly colored fruit by 25 per cent, without reducing yields. Pruning also makes it possible to get' more adequate spray coverage, and cut down oh waste of expensive spray chemicals. Removing down-growing branches and weak fruit wood throughout the bearing surface will provide *' more end better light to all parts of the tree. , - ■
A second method of thinning apples is by using dinitro and hormone chemicals. They can be recommended for orchards located on frost-free sites. The dinitro chemical sprays used during the pre-bloom and blossoming periods are more hazardous for orchards in areas where late spring frost may further reduce the fruit set. Hormone sprays applied in the post-bloom period are safer. ■
The third method of thinning apples is the old hand way of pulling off the fruit. The big advantage of hand thinning is that it gives the most desirable distribution of the crop, and can be done when all danger of frost is past. However, it is timedconsuming and more expensive than thinning by pruning or chemical sprays. It is 'Iso, in most cases, : done too late to get the fullest benefits.
