Growth of the public payroll in the purely civilian sphere has been a big factor in the increasing coat of all government over Ahe last decade.
Figures compiled by the Bureau of the Census show a net increase of approximately 2 million persons in public employment (Federal, state and local, and exclusive of the armed forces) in the period from October 1940 to the same mopth in 1950, or more than 40 per cent. Combined government civilian employment at the end of last October totalled more than 6.4 million persons as compared with just under 4.5 million in the same 1940 month, a

The county is pondering the question of building a school for the high school kids. The folks are complaining: population in the county is decreasing, yet school population is increasing—why is that? Taxes are high enough, and slated to .be higher, and folks just don’t see where the money is to come from. It’s the same hue and cry all over the country, and Rappahannock is just joining in.
There’s going to be a summer music colony in the county. Yes, the county is going "long hair” and it’s the kind the barber can’t eradicate? Before long maybe we’ll be so elevated in tbe music realm that the kids will substitute the Mozart Minuet for “Ring around the Rosy.” I would like for us both to live long enough to see the gee-tars abandoned for the harp and hear us Mountain Williams come- striding down the road, jugonshoulder, yodeling ‘The female of the species will be appareled in sleeping gyarments of a scarlet hue at the hour of her arrival.”
You won’t find any trouble getting adjusted when you get back home in the county. That longlegged Bill Lyne is still here, going at break-neck speed with his coat-tails flying behind. Miss Louise still hi’sts a window at Sperryville and ydls at a passer-by. Cheese Oden hasn’t improved a bit; he still makes his daily rounds and teases anyone he can find. The Lyle Millers still make their daily trip to Washington in the morning for the mail and to Sperryville for a visit in the afternoon. You’ll find the usual sights, Amissville, Woodville, Flint Hill, and down in the F. T.
The News Notes in the paper still tell you about'the visiting and having dinner with your neighbors, and the ladies still use bridge parties as an excuse to get together and talk.
