Mumps and whooping cough are running tiot in the schools. To drive up in front of a school building now frightens you. It sounds as if all the scholars are barking dogs. Grown folks who haven't had the mumps run in horror from the front porch if they arrive for a visit and find the young-fry swollen of jaw. It brings back memories when we were kids and the whole passel had whooping cough at the time of a wedding in the family. We howled so loud when they said we couldn’t attend that finally assent was given, but a firm rule was laid down and carried out: if one child began to cough, an adult was assigned to grab every chick and make a dash for the back .door and out of the house 1 *

The mountains of the county have been in top glory. One morning,the Old {lag loomed right hi your face! The whole ridge seethed to tower straight above you and so close you could reach out and touch it. After a 45-minute -blizzard one day 50 cars got stuck on the mountain, but “it's an ill wind that blows nobody good,” and an enterprising young man of the county just filled the back of his ear up with chains and went up the mountain to their rescue—and to the .betterment* of his business. He had the chains for sale, so why not take advantage of the occasion. Tea, Joe, the local boys are still industrious and pretty sharp of w't when it eomes to turning tn extra penny.
