Drive Now Underway ,
Edward A. Wayne of Richmond, Chairman of the State-wide annual solicitation for the Children’s Home Society of Virginia, announced the appointment of Mrs. D. D. Miller of Washington, as chairman for Rappahannock, with the following assistants: Slate Mills, Mrs. L. R. Hudson; Woodville, Miss Bertha Johnson; Sperryville, Mrs. M. Kathleen Lawrence ; Amissville, Mrs. A. C. Latham, Jr.; Flint HHl, Mrs. Frances ■Gilbert, and fo* Washington, Mrs. Floyd Compton.
The local drive is scheduled to be conducted the last two weeks in May.
Mr. Wayne, who is a vice-president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, said, “We are very glad to secure Mrs. Miller and her assistants and are looking for. ward to having a very successful campaign in Rappahannock. We do not expect to achieve an easy success in our efforts to raise $150,000 throughout the State, but we know how very important our work is in times like these. The .Society took large numbers of babies into care during both the first* and second world wars and we know that mobilization and the consequent dislocation of normal family life will increase the calls made on us. They are increasing already.”—
Last year the Society increased the number of new children received, the total number in care and the number placed for adoption. “But we need to increase our income also if we are to continue to do this work,” said Mr. Wayne. “Our costs have gone up like everything else. When your people contribute this year ask them to give something extra, if possible.”
Among the thousands of contributors are two brothers living in another state who send generous checks year after year with a letter expressing their approval of the work the Society is doing. Twenty-five years ago the Children’s Home Society found a home for them.
