man’s hobby, also watching a baseball game. Driving around aimlessly in a car or taking trips, are designated as hobbies. But, in reality, activities of this nature come under the heading of diversions, pastimes or sports.
Occasionally we hear it said that a man is riding his hobby and it is meant that he is juvenile, at least, in one respect. As a boy he got astride a stick and scampered away on what he, and his elders called his hobby horse. Hence, when a grown man rides a hobby it‘s a sign that he has not grown up. He still likes to play and pretend. -
A hobby, in its true sense, must be close at hand, in one’s own home preferably. A man’s workshop in his basement holds him enthralled, and he rides the hobby of making things with the risk of mashing a thumb. The fellow who goes to the kitchen, puts on a chef’s hat and a big apron, and tells everybody to clear out, has the hobby of cooking at the price of indigestion. Building a ship in a bottle is a hobby. Playing with a stamp collection qualifies. A hobby must be within easy reach and always ready. A hobby implies a personal quirk. A man stands off from other men in pursuit of his hobby. It’s his stick and he is going to ride it alone. With envy, probably also with jealousy, others will look down their noses, and remark sarcastically, “Oh, that’s his hobby. He’s all right otherwise.” But all those others don’t know what they are missing. It’s great to be just a little crazy.—Alfred W. Brandt.
