Field mice will be attacking the roots of Virginia’s apple trees this fall and winter if growers don’t guard against them.
Fred Dreiling, associate horticulturist at VPI, §ays the mice, in search of food and shelter, tunnel down around the fruit trees and feed on the roots. To stop this kind of damage, Dreiling suggests clean cultivation in the orchards, especially in young orchards. The mice move more readily into an orchard where there is a grass cover for protection.
Wire guards also can be placed around young trees, bpt this protectioft isn’t too effective for pine mice. Poisoning to kill iptee is necessary. Use zinc phosphide in cut-up apple' cubes, or strychnine in some small grain. Place poison in mice runways or in the areas where the mice are concentrated.
