I had occasion at the last annual Meeting of the Virginia Association of Soil Conservation District Supervisors to hear one of these cooperating farmers tell the story of his success. His report was an inspiring one—a challenging one—challenging not only to the 150,000 landowners of the state but to the entire citizenry. He told how conservation farming combined with other good farm ' management practices had increased his crop yields, raised his farm income and improved the standard of living of his family. My observation as I travel the State bears out the testimony of this young Virginia farmer. Using our lands to produce the crops for which they are best suited and treating them to keep them permanently productive does pay. It pays both in dollars and cents and in satisfaction—satisfaction that is derived from being a good steward of the heritage entrusted to our care.
