Changes In Apple .

Marketing Needed

Need for an immediate change in apple production and marketing practices in Virginia is pointed up in a recent study by the VPI Agricultural Extension Service and the State Department of Agriculture.

The officials back up their plea for changes with some facts. For instance: apple rail unloads at Norfolk in 1950 totalled 89 carlots, of which 81 were from the Pacific Northwest. Apple unloads at Richmond and Roanoke were 80 9arlots, with 78 from the Pacific Northwest. “When apples from other states can pay the increased transportation ^charges required and still sell in local ’markets to the disadvantage of Virginia growers, there is need for immediate change,’* they contend.

Competition from other fruits also jis a factor. A recent New York study |showed that of the total money "spent for fruit, bananas represented 32 |percent, oranges 25 percent, apples (a lowly third) 12 percent, gr a pelf ruit 10 per cent, and strawberries 5

tercent. The other 16 percent was _ent for 18 other fruits.

The officials say principal apple producing regions in Virginia are exacted to retain their importance, while smaller orchards on submarginal land will become of less importance for future market supplies. The part of the Virginia apple crop used by processors exceeds the national average, and is not expected to increase.
