Mr. Russell, national president, spoke to the group, reporting of the progress of the organization, the number of membership, and the fact that a new building had recently been purchased in Washington, D. C., for $70,000 to house the offices. He emphasized the duty of each Star Carrier to maintain the high standards of service and to mark the group as one of integrity.
Another report to the group told of the advances made in making working conditions better for the carriers, with regulations for mail boxes to be placed conveniently, and other such helpful aids.
Joe Jenkins was among the six new members enrolled in the organization at this meeting.
One visiting speaker told that there were 11,600 mail routes in the United States, but only 7,400 carriers were members of the organization. At the national convention held in Montgomery, Alabama, in August there were 134 delegates from the states; three from Virginia, of which J. E. Ellmore was one.
The first star mail route was in 1885 on a stage coach. At the national convention, a large cake, bearing an iced stage coach, was served commemorating the first star mail route.
