About 100 years ago a famous liberal French politician and writer, Alexis de Tocqueville visited America and wrote a book about the people he learned to know so well.

Among other optimistic things he said concerning our infant nation was: “I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors and her ample rivers, and it was not there; in her fertile fields and boundless praries, and it was not there; in her rich mings and her vast world commerce, and it wTas not .there. Not until I went to the churches of America and heard her pulpits aflame with righeousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.”

We now come to our subject; “Intellectual Germ Warfare—The Illusion of Something for Nothing.”

This germ is a weapon against freedom, nourished by freedom itself—the freedom of speech.

With this germ socialist Russia has conquered entire nations from within by weakening and corrupting the personal integrity and morality of their peoples, by blaming the inevitable hardships of mortal existence on the “propertied classes.”

With this germ in England, where low productivity had brought low living standards, the Fabian socialists took over, first the British Liberal Party, then the Labor Party, and then the Government itself.

And even in America where the conquest of poverty has been almost completed, the germ is being used, not by foreign agents or domestic socialists, but by power-seeking individuals, many of whom do not even know the dangers involved.

Promises of something for nothing have been implanted into the minds of school children, farmers, labor unions, and almost every minority group.
