the twenty odd held annually m the state for the past seven years. There were five consignors whose ‘calves graded 100% Fancy and Choice: John S. Browning, W. C. Campbell, R. M. Menefee, Leon Greenaway, and W. H. Lyne. Contrary to previous years buyers had much less dollar value regard for grade. Last year buyers paid around $5 per cwt. difference between grade regardless of sex while this year the difference was quite variable eg: Fancy Steers brought but 53c per cwt more than choice, choice $2.61 more than Good, Good $1.27 more than medium; Heifers: Fancy brought $2.39 more than Choice, Choice 76c more than good and Good only 47; more \than mediums.
Steers averaged $31.74 per cwt and heifers $27.28.
A preliminary report of the Winchester sale shows the following totals and averages: 3205 head, 438 lbs. $401,965.30, Average price $28-25 Average per head $123.68 49.6% Fancy and Choice.
Rappahannock Farmers Buy
Ten Rappahannock farmers purchased a total of 175 head of which all were heifers excepting one lot. These local buyers were Earl B. Combs, L. W. Buckley, John S. Davis Elgin Groseclose, Ralph Ingersol, B. C. Jackson, L. L. Viogt, E. A. Willis, W. C. Williams and James E. Yates.
Calves Go To Six States -
Forty-one buyers from the following six states made purchases and are listed in order of the quantity purchased : Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Michigan, New York and Delaware. Eugene B. Roberts of Maryland purchased the. largest number of calves - 71 head. One of the most satisfying features of the sale was 16 of the 41 buyers were repeat customers!
Calves, were consigned by 31 different breeders who delivered from a low of three head to a high of 162.
