There are a couple of newcomers to the county down near Woodville. I’ve a sneaking notion they are going to do all right. They comment (with straight faces) that they came from Hicksville to Woodville and haven’t discovered yet whether the move was up or down. They admit that they have a lot to learn, the first item of which was that when a workman promises that he will be to work bright and early in the morning, you expect him when you see him—and not one minute before. They state that they are recovering from being disappointed when work is not completed on schedule. Something tells me that their sense of humor (if it survives) is going to make them fit well in Rappahannock.
Th classified ads in any paper are nearly always good reading.
A recent one read thus: “Lost and Found — Will the party who picked up the black cocker puppy Saturday on Wendell Road either return him or come back and get the three-year-old boy he belongs to?”
Two elderly ladies rented a summer home, sight unseen, and were dismayed by its isolation. After a few frightened nights, they paid the old man who did odd jobs to sleep in a shed near their door every night. The next summer they took the place again and proceeded to look up the old man. At his cottage they found a sign posted: “Wood supplied, odd jobs done. Narvus wimmen slept with.”
