Follow safety rules when you’re using a corn picker.
That's the advice from W- HLyne, county agent, who says a com picker must he handled skillfully and safely in the field to avoid excessive com losses, clogging or accidents. A picker must be checked and adjusted to the season’s crop. Field stops for repairs, adjustments, and unclogging increase the chahces for accidents. } Here are a few safe corn picking rules:
Never reach into a picket when it is running. Shut off the power be* fore oiling, adjusting, or unclogging.
Keep shields in place. When using Tounted pickers this includes tractor engine shields for fire prevention.
Dress for the job. Always wear close fitting clothing that is warm and comfortable. "Extra thumb’’ gloves are especially dangerous. * Watch out for falls. Prohibit extra riders gnd see that you have firm footing when climbing on and off equipment. Never dismount while 'tractor is in motion. Keep tractor platforms free of tripping hazards.
On the highway, use a red flag to warn motorists of slow moving vehicle. Use lights, white in front and red on rear, at night.
Beware of fires. Never refuel tractor when motor is hot or running. Keep fuel lines free of leaks and use a non-breakable sediment bowl.
Be prepared. Keep a first aid kit where it will he available if needed, Always carry a fire extinguisher.
