Appert Birthday
Being Celebrated
Canners and canned foods fanciers will celebrate October 23 as the 200th anniversary of the birth of the man who made canning possible.
It was October 23, 1752, that Nicolas Appert was born in the village of Chalons-sur-Mame, France. His origins were humble and he was selfeducated. He was an obscure candymaker, brewer, distiller and baker when the French government in 1795 offered' a 12,000-franc reward to the citizen who would find a method of preserving perishable foods so that thev would keep indefinitely.
