Higher Taxes
It will be an unhappy meeting Monday, April 6, When the people of the county appear at the Courthouse to discuss the proposed increase in county tax levy. A proposed jump from last year’s $2.50 per hundred to $3.15 for the coming year is giving serious thought to the taxpayers in the county.
When paying taxes for one year begins to pinch on the pocketbook, a proposed increase brings thoughts bordering on desperation.
There will be no pleasure to complain. No one will enjoy saying that he can't afford to raise sufficient money to see that the children of the school have the best in educational facilities.
No resident of Rappahannock will relish the job of standing up and telling the Board of Supervisors that the budget wiH have to be cut. Everyone knows that the board members hunted long and hard for some place * to cut expenses—and they couldn’t find it
Some people seem to think that there is no answer, and that the taxes will have to go up. After all, taxes have never been placed in a popularity contest, and no one expects the Monday meeting to be a picnic. The situation promises to be an unhappy one.
