The newly appointed Attorney General appeared before our Appro* priatiohs Committee last week and asked for $8 million more to operate the Department of Justice next year than was proposed in the Truman budget.
The Deputy Secretary of Defense testifying later in the week before our Banking and Currency Committee said he estimated defense spending for the current fiscal year at $44 (billion. The Truman budget estimated it for the next fiscal year at $46 billion. There have been rumors to the effect that the new Secretary of Defense hasn’t found even $2 billion of cuts that can be made in that budget. But the Truman budget must be cut nearly $10 billion in order to be balanced and the bulk of that must come from the military and foreign aid because the military alone is sixty per cent and there are numerous domestic items such as interest on the public debt, pensions, etc., that can’t be cut.
