The Cross of Calvary is a demonstration of what sin will do in the name of religion. Dead, devitalized,» ritualistic religion always persecutes, history verifies this statement. On the other hand the cross demonstrates the; undying love,, of the Father for the creatures (men) which He has created. The cross illustrates the limit to which sin will lead me as over against the love of God for men.
John comes immediately to the tragic betrayal of Jesus by Judas and then clearly reveals the trials which are all unlawfully executed. Annas was in line for the High Priest, but like Judas sold the office for a more paying position. Caiphas was acting in his place through political pull and the Sanhedrin met unofficially and out of order, likewise the trial be-„ fore Pilate who compromised the convictions of justice and his conscience for popular approval of the crowd and delivered Jesus to the mob.
