Rapp’k Chief8 Lose To Stevenson, 7-5
The Rappahannock Chiefs had an off-day Sunday as they allowed Stevenson to score a solid 7-5 win over them on the Stevenson diamond. A combination of errors and tough luck cost the Chiefs a victory although they outhit ’ Stevenson, 14-5.
All 5 of the Chiefs’ runs were scored in the first inning after 2 men were down. P. Pullen led off the attack with a single and R. Clater followed suit. N. Settle walked and C. Dodson was safe on an error. B. Menefee and £. Scroggins singled as the Chiefs ran roughshod over the rattled Stevenson team. Dehaven, pitching for Stevenson, was pulled after giving up 6 hits and 5 runs. Patton, the relief pitcher, threw to J. Sisk who grounded out to retire the Chiefs. ?
Stevenson scored only 1 ran in the first but proceeded to score 3 in the second, and 1 each in the fourth, seventh and eighth innings.
Junior Hawkins relieved Sisk in the eighth. Rappahannock threatened in the ninth by loading the bases with no men out. Menefee walked, E. Scroggins singled and J. Hawkins chose to bunt advancing Menefee and Scroggins. He’ was safe on first as Stevenson held to prevent any possibility of the man on third coming home. P. Clater was thrown out at home as the next man up hit infield. B. Clater was out on a pop up to the infield. Chance for a tied score or a win had slimmed but there was still hope as Pullen advanced to the plate. Attempting to get out, of the way of an ifiside ball, Pullen knocked a grounder that rolled straight to first for an easy out
