SPREADING RADI PLY While the Alfalfa Weevil was first discovered in the United States near Salt Lake City in 1904 it did not appear in the east until in 1952 when it was in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Deleware, New Jersey and Virginia. During that year it was found in 3 or 4 Virginia Counties and has spread quite rapidly being known to be in 28 or 30 Virginia counties thus far this year as far south as Lunenburg County. Thus far greatest damage has been to Alfalfa fields in tbe vicinity of Fredericksburg where farmers have suffered serious loses. Most Valuable Hay Crop
Alfalfa is the most valuable hay crop grown. Farmers grow more of it today than any other legume. It is preferred as a livestock feed because of its high yield, its palatability, its richness in protein and its high content of calcium and vitamins. T Larvae do greatest damage. (From USDA leaflet "The Alfalfa Weevil.”) The larvae of the Alfalfa weevil do the greatest damage to the first crop and usually are most abundant when the plants are budding. They feed within the plant tips, on the upper leaves as they open, and then on the lower foliage, skeletonizing the leaves. Damaged leaves dry rapidly and the field takes on a greyish to whiteish cast. Adults also damage new shoots. DESCRIPTION :
Full grown larvae are about three eighths of an inch long, their heads are brown, their bodies green with a wide white stripe running down the middle of their backs parallel by two faint white stripes on either side.
