The much dreaded Alfalfa Weevil was discovered in Rappahannock recently by Dr. Muka of the VPI Experiment Station, who is doing research on its control, and Arthur Morris, in charge of Economic Insect Survey project conducted through the VPI Entomology Department. Larvae of the insects were found in the vicinity of Woodville, Slate Mills, Huntly, and Washington; in fact every hay field inspected in which the predommant crop was Alfalfa was infested. While the degree of infestation will not cause serious damage this year the entomologist said we should be prepared to spray alfalfa fields in 1956 when growth is about 3 inches in height otherwise yields would likely be seriously reduced.
