Why house turkey breeders? To fence out wild birds, to reduce feed requirements per turkey hen, and to reduce the loss of eggs oh range, says Virginia Polytechnic Institute Poultry Specialist R. H. Burtner. \ /f
The loss of mash from range feeders, because of wi}£ birds, has bean estimated as high as 10 to 20 pounds per breeder. Housed turkeys need less feed for body heat and maintenance. Feed at four and one-half eents per pound is very expensive fuel compared to good housing says Burtner. '•!
Eggs laid on the range are often lost. Field observations lead specialists to believe that "from 2 to 10 percent more eggs are lost on the range than in the house.
What type of housing is need, ed? Research indicates that protecting breeding turkeys from falling weather nod. intense winds is sufficient. A minimum of insulation is needed in the roof to prevent sweating and help prevent damp litter.
The VPI poultry department will help growers plan a house for their breeders, says Burtner. '
