Field data collected in Virginia on several million broilers demonstrate that feed conversion and carcass condemnations are poorer in colder months than in warmer months. Poor ventilation in the broiler house results in a reduction in feed consumption and a porbable decrease in feed conversion.
Says Dr. Howes, “A properly ffiodified poultry house, capable of providing temperatures of 45 to 85 degree, relative humidity of 40 to 70 percent, proper air movement and adequate lighting can give under Virginia conditions: 6 to 8 percent better feed efficiency, appreciable reduction in condemnation, up to 3H percent better egg production, cut labor requirements for layers 14 to 20 percent, reduce fixed cost per production unit, and return money spent on modification in a few years.”
