The Telstsr test message was sent at the rate of 875,000 bits per second using an experimental data transmitter in England and a matching data receiver in New York. As a check, the information generated in England was also generated in New York where it was compared electronically with the received pattern to detact any errors in the transmission.
The test was one in a series being carried out by the Long Lines department and Bell Laboratories to demonstrate the extent of Telstar’s data transmission capacity. Low, medium and high speed data systems that used conventional equipment have already been tested successfully. Bell Laboratories has participated also in the experimental high speed tests including an earlier transmission at the 875,000 bit rate to and from the Andover ground station only. Telstar has proved to be an excellant transmission medium for all types of data signals tested.
Later in the month business machine manufacturers are to participate with the Bell System in additional tests of dati channels via Telstar. These will be designed to demonstrate the
