Enough research has no# been done to justify the investment for such poultry house modifications. It has been shown, says Dr. Howes, that layers perform most efficiently at temperatures between 55 and 70 degree. Temperatures below 45 degrees will appreciably lower egg production and increase feed consumption.

Research also shows that under improved conditions (of environment control) greater bird density will greatly increase producer income. The proper use of fans in an adequate building will usually result in 1% square feet per bird of floor space being adequate.

In laying house cases studied, it appears that costs of modifications would be equalled by increased returns in less than two years. (Production was calculated at 18 dozen per year, net returns at 5 cents per dozen, and feed at 4 cents per pound.)

In broiler production, research has shown that, beyond the normal brooding age, broilers will produce meat more efficiently at warm temperatures (75 degree) than at cooler ones (50 degree).
