The error rate for this data system using Telstar communications satellite was one error in several million words.
The “messages” for the experiment were generated in England by experimental equipment supplied from Bell Telephone Laboratories. The British transmitted the data signal from their earth station in Cornwall. The signal was beamed out 5700 miles over the Atlantic to Telstar, which amplified and retransmitted the message. The signal was picked up at the Bell System’s earth station in Andover, Maine.
From Andover the information was sent by microwave relay to New York. Bell Laboratories engineers carried out the test from New York over facilities provided by the Long Lines Department of the AT&T Company.
The 20-minute test demonstrated that Telstar can provide a data channel overseas with very high capacity — many times the combined capacity of other trans-Atlantic data facilities.
