dishes. Some give a pre-spray or rinse, thereby eliminating a pan of the scraping or hand rinsing you need to do. Others have a second wash cycle with a double detergent dispenser to mix detergent for the second cycle. Controls, too, are similar and completely automatic. Some are simply off-on switches, controlling the whole operation. Others allow you to increase or decrease the length of washing or drying cycles, or to repeat any part of them. As a safety measure, all dishwashers stop automatically if the door is opened. The amount of water that dishwashers use varies from about five to seven gallons each load., no more and possibly less than when you wash by hand. The water is kept at about 150 degrees .. far hotter than your hands can stand. The chief differences in dish washer models are in their openings — top — door or slide-out. You may want the top-opening model if your kitchen has narrow traffic lanes. The slide-out drawer type may suit your needs better if you need extra work surface, since its top may be used as a counter. If your kitchen does not have’ space near plumbing for a permanent installation, you still needn't be without a dishwasher. Several portable models that need no permanent connection to plumbing are available. They have easy-toconnect hoses for filling and draining and casters for rolling them to the sink to use.
Homemaking Hints
About 40 cents of every dollar spent on food goes for protein items. That is, for main dish items... meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dry beans and peas. So any money a woman can save in this area goes a long way in cutting her food budget. Instead of serving highpriced protein items each day, food economists in the U. S. Department of Agriculture suggest the homemaker slip into her menus a few of the less expensive foods. Casseroles and salads are favorite ways of serving these items.
