Three Are Convicted For Perk Violation!
The arrest and conviction of three men charged with violating Shenandoah National, Park regulations are reported by Superintendent R. Taylor Hoskins. George R. Birch of Manassas was charged with capturing a small fawn deer in the Park and Ernest J. Simpson of Annandale and Donald W. Sours of Falls Church were charged with aiding and abetting in the capture of the fawn. In hearing before U. S. Park Commissioner Isaac R. Dovel, jr., on May 18, Mr. Birchwas fined $25.00 and Messrs. Simp son and Sours were fined $10.00 each. The fawn was returned to the Park a few hours after it was captured and fortunately was reclaimed by its mbftier. Had she not claimed the fawn, it is doubtful that the fawn (less than 48 hours old) could have been reared on a bottle, Hoskins said. Hoskins reminds everyone once again that National Parks are sanctuaries for all forms of wildlife and it is a serious violation of federal regulations to hunt, kill, wound, frighten, capture, or attempt such acts in the Park. Deer are fairly abundant in the Park at this time of the year and everyone is encouraged to come into the Park often to see them and other forms of wildlife in their natural state. Hoskins cautioned visitors to observe and enjoy the wildlife in the Park but not to molest or frighten them. Drive carefully while in the Park and watch for deer and other wildlife darting out in front of cars. Help protect our wildlife - school will soon be out and families in great numbers will be driving many miles to see the deer and other animals in the Park.
