Traffic Warning!
“Drive to arrive alive" was the word today from Colonel C. W. Woodson, Jr., Chairman of the Governor's Highway Safety Committee and Superintendent of State Police, with the approach of Memorial Day weekend and the beginning of dangerous summer traffic. "Every summer, with its heavy weekend and vacation traffic, haste, impatience, discourtesy, exhaustion and alcohol take a heavy toll,* he said. Colonel Woodson asked motorists to plan both legs of their trips to avoid any temptation to hurry or to remain too long at the wheel. “Speed," he continued, "either in excess of the posted limits or too fast for existing conditions, is present in nearly half of our fatal crashes. He noted also that it is reliably estimated that a drinking driver is involved in more than 50 percent of all fatal crashes. Noting that seven out of 10 people killed or injured in traffic suffer innocently at the hands of a traffic-law violator, he asked for defensive driving. “Always expect the unexpected and remember that you do not have to be at fault yourself to be involved," he continued. Although the holiday falls on a Saturday, Colonel Woodson felt that many people would make a three-day weekend of the occasioji. The last time the holiday was considered a three* day one, in 1960, there were 10 deaths in Virginia and 490 in the nation.
