Every year thousands of fires start in homes hecause kitchen stoves are not kept clean and in proper repair. To prevent this type of fire, the National Board of Fire Underwriters recommends that ovens, broilers and topof-stove burners be kept free of fatty grease and that grease containers be stored away from stoves. If a grease fire should start while you are cooking, turn off the fuel immediately, the NBFU says. Then cover the pan with a large, flat cover using a long handled fork to set it in place. An alternate method would be to shower the fire with baking soda or salt.
