Miller, $5.00 donated by Rappahannock National Bank, 2nd C. E. Johnson, Jr., 3rd Lois Snead, and 4th Marshall Burke, each winning a protein block awarded by Rappahannock Farmers' Coop. Ike Eller, of the VPI Animal Science Department and Secretary of the Virginia BCIA Weighed and graded the calves assisted by Rappahannock County Agent, W. H, Lyne. While the group of calves used in the demonstration were unselected by the Millers they were quite uniform in grade. However after computing adjusted daily gain ‘ and calculating all weights to a 205 day basis, results showed a 116 pound spread in weight. Both of these calves were graded the same. Contestants were given the birth date of each calf. From here their selections were based on what they saw as the 1 “eye-balling method* is the means used by most cattlemen as the basis of culling
