Living in a big old house on Chipping Hill, eight miles from Charing Cross, were the 55-yearold widowed mistress, her brother-in-law (60 and handler of her legal and financial matters), her nephew from New Zealand, her pretty companion, a caretaker and child daughter. A bit later was to arrive, by special invitation, a woman friend whom the mistress hadn’t seen since their girlhood days. One Sunday the mistress with her companion did the unusual. She attended church services. Although her attention persistently wandered, she heard and was subconsciously impressed with a statement the pastor made: “It was a common error to suppose that the passage of time made a base action any less bad."
