Outdoor Burning

Effective Monday, March 1, Virginia law prohibits outdoor burning before 4 o’clock in the afternoon. This law states that from March 1, to May 15, of each year, it is unlawful to burn within 300 feet of woodland or inflammable vegetation leading to woodland, except between the hours of 4 o’clock in the afternoon and 12 o’clock midnight. This means that, in most cases, it will be unlawful to burn except late in the afternoon, because few places are located 300 feet or more away from woods or dry grass fields, Although the law may seem restrictive, it is based on data accumulated through years of experience by the Division of Forestry. Most of the big forest fires originate during the early or middle part of the day. At this time, during March, April, and May, the temperature is high, wind is strong, and humidity is low. These weather conditions, along with the dry and combustible vegetation which is plentiful at this time of .year make outdoor fires hazardous at any time. However, since the wind usually decreases late in the day, and the humidity rises burning may be safer during legal burning hours late in the afternoon.
