********** Mast also expressed belief that the harmone, progesterone, used in controlledestrus in beef cows, will be released within a year. This harmone is fed daily for a three-weeks period; four days later most of the ' cows will be ready to breed. The heat period will re-occur three weeks later. It is presently considered to be of value as an aide to artificial insemination during the first and second heat period following feeding of the harmone. Cows are bred articifically in March and April which should settle 50%-70%. Clean-up bulls are used after the first two heat periods. It makes A.I. of cows to superior bulls practical and reduces the number of bulls a breeder will have to keep by 50%.
********** ? ‘CORN PERFORMANCE TESTS* - 1964 have been . received. Sorry there are not a sufficient number of copies for general distribution. Reports of the Orange and Blacksburg Experiment Station were under conditions most like those in Rappahannock County so findings at these stations are of the great est value to us. Each variety tested is rated as to stand obtained under two rates of planting, % lodged, % broken, yield at both high (22,000 kernels/acre) and low (17,000 kernels/acre) rates of planting, relative yield as compared to old stand-bys, quality of grain etc. Come by and look the report over. You may want to try some of the more promising new varieties or see how the corn you have been planting compares.
