The agronomists believe that a farmer must be producing at least 3.5 tons per acre of alfalfa to make it profitable. Those with an average yield of only 2.5 tons may need to look for an alternative crop or improve their production practices. However, the farmer who is making 3.5 tons per acre, who is getting good control of the weevil with recommended treatments, and who has the soils on which to grow the crop properly, should probably stay in alfalfa production. After all this is said, it still leavps some farmers looking for a substitute for alfalfa, pfobably the first crop they should consider is corn silage It can produce more TDN per acre than any crop and at the lowest cost per hundred pounds of any crop except pasture, and if properly handled produces a high quality forage. Corn silage helps intensify your feed program, if your soil is suitable for high yield. Corn silage with winter cover crops may be grown continuously on certain first bottom soils, and on level lands not subject to erosion. Many soils and situations are not suitable for producing continuous corn, however. It is quite possible to produce 20 tons of silage per acre on many soils, and some soils can make 25 to 28 tons per acre. While Sudan-sorghum hybrids will not replace alfalfa or corn silage, they should fit into the cropping system on many farms. On good soils, properly fertilized and produced, you may grow up to IT Tons of silage per acre. In most tests the yield has been 14 to 15 tons per acre.
