Outdoor burning accounts for about 35 to 40 percent of all forest fires in Virginia. While some fires start when the burning is actually being done, a great many fires start the 'day the burning is done. This happens when the coals are left to smolder, and failing to go out, sparks blow to dry grass the next day resulting in a damaging forest fire. Foresters request that the following precautions betaken when burning at any time during the hazardous spring months. (1) Observe the law, burn only during legal hours. (2) Stay with the fire until it is dead out, or extinguish before leaving. (3) Have tools and water handy. (4) Clear a wide area around place where burning will be done. (5) Burn only when the wind is calm and humidity is„ high.
