other grass as a hay crop and using considerable nitrogen to boost the yield. Agronomists at Virginia Tech have found that with 100 pounds of nitrogen and adequate phosphate and potash, production averages two and one-half to three tons of hay per acre. This hay will be more expensive than alfalfa with three spring sprayings to control the weevil. It will cost about $2.90 to $3 per hundred pounds of TDN, against about $2.50 for alfalfa, and $2.50 for the Sudan-sorghum cross. Considerable work has beer done with barley as a silage and it Is quite satisfactory when cut at the soft dough stage. It often gives yields of ten or more tons p^r acre. Some farmers are using a one year cropping system of corn silage and barley silage and making up to 9,000 pounds of TDN per acre at a cost of around $1.95 per hundred pounds as fed.
