The 1963 Virginia Livestock Farm Account Summary including 135 farms shows some interesting facts. Of the thirty one Beef Cow-Calf farms reporting there was; an average loss of $1161.00; with a high net of $9,180.00 and a low of minus $8,813.00 The high farm probably sold high quality purebreds at fancy prices and must have had some wellpaying minor enterprises in addition. For sure his acres per animal unit increased an average of $968 in 1963 over 1962, while average receipts declined $1279.00. None of this comes as a surprise. Nor is it surprisingthat the 40 cow-calf-steer farms had an average net loss of $2623, and the 53 general livestock farms a net loss of $555. 00.
